The Living Isnād

The most rigorous historical method the world has ever known

Most Muslims imagine hadith transmission was a game of telephone. It was not. Today, the science of hadith is often taught as a set of conclusions, and an isnād as a list of names. The muḥaddithūn saw both differently. To them, the isnād was a chain of living people, not a list of dead names. Each had a story, and the hadith text moved through those stories. Analyzed properly, the stories not only conveyed the truth of the hadith but revealed its meaning. This course brings that practice back. It makes that process visible so you begin to think like a muḥaddith, see what he sees, and understand what he understands. And it teaches you to use the method to engage with modern science, post-modern historical critique, and Hume’s problem of miracles.

You will see with your own eyes that the isnād system is based on historical evidence, not religious belief. That it is more rigorous than any historical method the world has ever known. That miracle-reports and prophetic predictions were not fabricated after the fact. And that the Quran and its qirāʿāt have been preserved with 100% certainty.

Everyone is talking about Palestine. Nobody is talking about the Quranic message the Quran itself directs at the Children of Israel.

The Quran uses the same terminology as the Bible (bayt, Bani Isra’il, al-bayt al-maqdis), refers to the same figures (Abraham, Solomon, David, Moses), and speaks to them in a language they would recognize.
